Mad Dog Becomes Obsolete: Hitchens Returns!

"People who say they don't care about what others think of what they write are fooling themselves, or just dishonest," a friend, once told me. People write because they want to be read; there can be no other reason.

But then, how to explain diaries? Those, at least putatively, are meant NOT to be read, except by the writer himself (or herself.) One can argue that diarist secretly hopes to be discovered, or that the diarist wants to go back, some day, for a glimpse of what they were like in years past, at some forgotten, lost time of development.

Personally, Mad Dog, has always been with Joan Didion on this: "I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means."

So, for years, Mad Dog's blogs have served that purpose and he has paddled onward, against the current, undaunted by an indifferent world. This blog has two followers, and a typical blog post may garner 2,000 views, most of which are likely robots from Brazil, Vietnam and India.

So why bother? Simply to organize and examine one's own thoughts?

In the past, Mad Dog has rationalized his output by recognizing that he is not seeing his positions adequately presented in The New York Times, The Atlantic or the New Yorker--three wonderful platforms hosting, for the most part, thoughtful, insightful writers, but writers, nevertheless, who are only writers, who--with some exceptions--are not doctors, lawyers, engineers, i.e., they are not people who have come to their ideas by personal struggle, but only by reading and talking with other people.

But now, an occult phenomenon has changed things: Somebody has managed to simulate Christopher Hitchens' voice, his written voice, and to address a slate of important topics as Hitchens would have done, had he lived. (Just to make it fun, whoever it is has simulated Hitchens' spoken voice as well.)

Mad Dog has been unable to ascertain who has managed this youtube Channel feat, "Hitchens Resurrected," and it is likely the final product has had some help from artificial intelligence, but, in the end, Mad Dog has realized, with this channel going strong, there is really nothing left to say, at least, for the moment.

It is all said so much better on this youtube thing, by whoever it is, speaking in the style of Hitchens, but,  more importantly, saying what needs to be said, what Mad Dog has not come close to organizing as well.

So, for now, Mad Dog will retire, sit back and simply read the Hitch, only to return if Mad Dog needs to add something Resurrected missed.

  1. I'm sure your fellow leftists will miss your photos of Hitler and Nazis. I think you need to reconsider your IVY league leftist dogma during your hiatus to develop a more nuanced, sophisticated view of the world, and realize the moral depravity of the far left and the death, injury and pain they have caused to Jews, the poor, minorities. Asians, urban dwellers. and patriotic Americans in law enforcement and our nation's military. Like I said before watch the Pitt on HBO because that is much better fit for you.

  2. Say it isn’t so Mad Dog! The idea of you taking a leave is both sad and disheartening. Your writing is hardly obsolete. Yes Hitchens Resurrected is remarkable- it certainly is like Hitch speaking from the grave, but alas he is not- this is the voice of a machine. Well at least that’s what every opinion about it I’ve read has indicated. However the videos are generated, they are wonderful, but no more so than the Mad Dog posts—just two different styles.

Everything one reads points to a future with AI replacing so much, but I never suspected it might replace you. Don’t let that happen Mad Dog-we need all voices right now- human and machine generated. Your posts continue to instruct, amaze and amuse- they can’t possibly be replaced by an AI generated Christopher Hitchens. Now is not the time to walk off the battlefield….

  3. Ms. Maud,
The only thing I would miss is your rejoinders.
But living in the echo chamber has grown old.
I find it difficult to get all the way through Heather Cox Richardson's youtube posts, and even Paul Krugman is only telling in with charts and graphs what I already know.
I find myself saying, reading these folks, "Yes, of course! But tell me something I don't already know."
We already know all we need to know about the Trump MAGA mob, Stephen Miller, Russell Vought, RFKJR etc.
At what point did news about Hitler, Goebbels and Goering stop being news?
I think we've reached this point with Trump and his merry Gestapo band, the parade of Barbie doll Stepford wives from his cabinet and his Toadies on the SCOTUS and in Congress.
When and if I find I have something irrepressible to convey, you can count on my reappearing, but, for now, the time to talk is past.
At least, the time for talk among our current influencers is past.
Much as I agree with Adam Shiff, Jamie Raskin, and Hakeem Jeffries (sp?), these are not the leaders we need.
Sheldon Whitehouse is better, but still doesn't have the zing.
Even President Obama seems a little to restrained and cerebral for the moment.
J.B. Pritzker comes closest to the recipe.
But he seems stuck in the crowd, like the nuclear reactor surrounded by the cooling coils.
Trump built his brand for decades and he knew what he wanted: Attention, and constantly. That is all that really matters to him, which may be something of a blessing.
Who can arise from the ashes, I cannot imagine today.

  5. Your mind is trapped in a 1970s paradigm. Wake up to the woke threat to the USA. Trump today negotiated release of Gaza hostages and surrender of Hamas. He is saving the world and America from leftist radical terrorism.

  6. Trump troops are reducing illegal border crossings and driving crime down in urban America saving poor minority lives. God bless the USA!,

  7. I did appreciate your sincerity in admitting all you understood about urban lawlessness was derived from watching the wire on hbo and all you understood about the middke east was watching Exodus the film. Try educating yourself.

  8. And your praise for Jamie Raskin who perpetrated one of the worst political hoaxes in USA history the Russian hoax shows how illogical and foul, vile are leftist views. They have no regard for truth only interested in disseminating leftist antisemitic rich white elite propaganda. .

  10. Too bad Mad Dog has left because I wanted him to tell us what Obama did to win the Nobel Peace prize? Was it allowing ISIS to conquer a huge swath of the middle east and impose their caliphate that committed actual genocide against many groups and enslaved children? Was that Obama's great accomplishment to merit the Peace Prize? Mad Dog do you think Trump deserves the Peace prize?

  11. ""The Rise of ISIS. President Obama failed to anticipate the rise of ISIS, which he ridiculed as a “jayvee team” as recently as last year, and he has since failed to do anything effective to impede it. ISIS had established territory in large parts of Syria and Iraq; it now “controls a volume of resources and territory unmatched in the history of extremist organizations.” Under Mr. Obama’s watch, a jihadist caliphate has been established in the heart of the Middle East — and the president has no strategy to deal with it." Obama should never have received the Nobel Peace Prize!! He was an utter incompetent in foreign policy.
